Christine Mayr is a Member of Sloan Kettering Institute in New York. She received her M.D. from Free University in Berlin and her Ph.D. in Immunology from Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. Her lab studies the functions of mRNAs that go beyond their roles as templates for protein synthesis. She discovered that 3′UTRs can mediate protein-protein interactions of newly translated proteins. This means that 3′UTRs contain genetic information to regulate protein functions and received the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award to study this topic. More recently, her lab discovered a cytoplasmic membraneless organelle that provides a local environment for translation. The current focus of the lab is to learn how mRNAs contribute to cytoplasmic organization and to protein maturation. This includes RNA-mediated suppression of protein aggregation and protein complex assembly.
