Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic is University Professor, the highest academic rank at Columbia University, as the first engineer to receive this distinction. She is also the Mikati Foundation Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Medical Sciences. Her laboratory is working on engineering functional human tissues for regenerative medicine and studies of disease, including heart, lung, bone, tumors and vasculature. She trained over 150 graduate students and postdocs and founded four start up companies. She is a member of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the Academia Europaea, the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Medicine and National Academy of Inventors.
