Karin has a background in biochemistry and X-ray crystallography. She did her PhD studies at the University of Cambridge, followed by two postdoctoral positions at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology in Dortmund and the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg. Karin then became a group leader in the Department of Neurobiology at the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences in Göttingen studying autophagy-related proteins before starting her editorial career at Nature Communications, where she worked for five years. She joined Structure as Editor-in-Chief in December 2021.
