Friedrich Förster studied physics at the RWTH University Aachen and moved towards structural biology for his Ph.D. work at the Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry (PhD with distinction, 2005). He used cryo-electron tomography (ET) to study the structures of membrane-associated complexes, pioneering subtomogram averaging as a means to increase resolution. After a postdoctoral stay at the University of California San Francisco focusing on integrative modelling of complexes, he started a research group back at Max Planck (2008), which moved to Utrecht University (Netherlands) in 2016, where he currently serves as a professor. Main themes of the group are the structural characterization of protein biogenesis and proteasomal degradation at organelle membranes as well as the development of the necessary cryo-ET software. His group integrates cryo-EM/ET analysis of isolated complexes, functional cell-free systems, and unperturbed cells to obtain a comprehensive understanding of protein processing in health and disease.
