Shyam Prabhakar

Shyam Prabhakar obtained a B.Tech in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and a PhD in Applied Physics from Stanford University. He was sole recipient of the 2001 American Physical Society PhD thesis award for Beam Physics. Following postdoctoral fellowships at Stanford (Samuel Karlin) and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Eddy Rubin), he joined the Genome Institute of Singapore as an independent investigator. His lab uses single-cell RNA-seq, cohort-scale ChIP-seq and other high-throughput assays, together with algorithm development, to uncover markers and mechanisms of human diseases. Major achievements include the first single-cell transcriptomic analysis of colorectal cancer, the first large-scale screen for histone acetylation QTLs, the first histone acetylome-wide association study of a case-control cohort and the first general-purpose peak detection algorithm for omics profiles. He currently serves as Associate Director, Integrative Genomics and GIS lead for the centre for Big Data and Integrative Genomics (c-BIG), a multi-institute consortium tasked with building the genome analytics infrastructure for Singapore's National Precision Medicine Program.
