Xiang-Dong Fu received his Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University in 1988 and postdoctoral training at Harvard from 1988 to 1992.  Dr. Fu joined the faculty in 1992 at UC, San Diego and rose through the rank to become Distinguished Professor. In 2023, he joined Westlake University as Chair Professor.

The signature discoveries made by Professor Fu in his career including (1) establishing the SR family of splicing factors and their roles in constitutive and regulated pre-mRNA splicing, (2) discovering and characterizing the functions of SR protein-specific kinases in signaling and cancer, (3) revealing diverse strategies for RNA binding proteins in regulated gene expression, and (4) elucidating regulatory RNA programs critical for cell differentiation and fate switch. His contributions to biomedical research have been honored by selection to Searle Scholar (1994), the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Scholar (1997), and AAAS Fellow (2010). He received the Ray Wu award in 2016 and Falling Walls Berlin for the Science Breakthroughs award in 2020.
