Research in the Klingenspor lab investigates mechanisms regulating energy balance. In this context, the development and function of thermogenic brown and beige adipocytes is of prime interest. These thermogenic adipocytes are uniquely equipped for uncoupled respiration, but also specialize in futile cycling of metabolic pathways. Beyond these thermogenic functions driving energy expenditure, we revealed a novel endocrine mechanism identifying brown adipose tissue as a communication hub in the gut-brain-axis controlling food intake. The underlying molecular mechanism requires activation of the secretin receptor in brown adipocytes through the meal-associated surge of the gut hormone secretin.
