Elena I. Rugarli is professor of Molecular Biomedicine at the University of Cologne. She studied medicine at the University of Milan and specialized in Neurology at the same University. Since establishing her independent group at the Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine in Naples, Italy, her main scientific interest is to dissect pathogenic mechanisms leading to axonal degeneration, by studying the function of genes involved in hereditary spastic paraplegia. A main focus of her research is to understand the role of mitochondrial quality control in axonal degeneration, including post-transcriptional mechanisms that regulate mitochondrial biogenesis and function.
