Christian Metallo is a Professor in the Molecular and Cellular Biology laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and an Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego. His lab explores how altered metabolic states contribute to cancer progression, macular disease, and neuropathy, with a goal of identifying new therapeutic strategies for patients. Christian received his B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 2000 before joining Merck Research Laboratories to conduct vaccine bioprocess engineering research. He completed his Ph.D. studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Chemical and Biological Engineering and was an American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellow in Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Christian started his lab at UC San Diego in 2011 and moved to Salk in 2021, where the team applies stable isotope tracing, mass spectrometry, and cell biology approaches to trace metabolic pathways in living systems.
