Dr William Douglas Figg received a BS in pharmacy from Samford University and a doctoral of pharmacy degree from Auburn University. He completed his internship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital and his fellowship in Drug Development at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also received an MBA degree from a combined program at Columbia University and the London Business School. He has received two honorary degrees: BS from Georgetown College and a Doctorate of Science from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. 

Dr Figg joined the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health in 1992. The following year, he became head of the Molecular Pharmacology Section and the Clinical Pharmacology Program. More recently he has been appointed co-director of the Office of Translational Resources and Associate Director of the NCI’s Center for Cancer Research. His research has focused on using pharmacological principles to optimize the treatment of cancer. Dr Figg has over 725 peer-reviewed publications, and his work has been cited in the scientific literature over 43,000. As a measure of scientific impact, Dr Figg has an H-index of 113.  He has received numerous awards and honors over the years. Dr Figg is adjunct professor at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons (Division of Hematology and Oncology) and serves as an adjunct professor at several schools of pharmacy.  He has mentored over 500 graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and medical oncology fellows during his time at the NCI and previously received the NCI outstanding mentor award.
